Bamboo Tattoo on Koh Phi Phi
Sak mai, the Thai bamboo tattoo, is the oldest way to tattoo in Thailand. At Bus Tattoo in Ton Sai, Mr. Bus has tattooed by hand since 2002. Here is how it works and what to expect.
Send your idea on InstagramWhat is a bamboo tattoo?
A long bamboo rod holds a single-use needle at its tip. The artist dips it in ink and taps it into the skin by hand, thousands of times, with a steady rhythm. No machine and no motor: the traditional Thai method, used for centuries for Sak Yant.

How does it feel?
Most people describe a light, rhythmic tapping. Many find it gentler than they expected, and you can pause whenever you need. Eat before you come, bring water and relax.
How does it heal?
Hand-poking is gentle on the skin, so many clients notice little redness the next day. Full healing still takes about two weeks: follow the aftercare and stay out of the sea while it heals.

What can be done with bamboo?
Everything you see on this site: Sak Yant, Thai art, realistic tigers and elephants, fine line pieces. Black and grey is the specialty, with soft colour touches like cherry blossoms.
Is it safe?
Each needle is single-use and opened in front of you. Tools are sterilised in an autoclave, gloves are worn at all times and the ink is imported.
